Memorable Events From Music One. |
Day one was pretty special on Music One. The transmitter had been broadcasting the station throughout Rugby and the surrounding villages from just after midnight on January 8th 2000, but the official launch show had been reserved for wacky (their own words) duo Phil & Ben. The Rugby Mayor and Mayoress had arrived to meet some of the team behind the station before going on-air with Phil & Ben, not knowing that Ben hadn't arrived at the studio's.....
All went well and the station was brought alive by Phil & Ben in their unique style, coupled with a very well structured interview with the special guests (well apart from Ben asking to look after the "heavy looking" official jewellery!!) until the guests went to depart from the town centre based studio's, when they discovered that Ben had infact parked his car in such way as to block them in!!!! An audio clip of said comical calamity can be found on this site.
Those who worked behind the scenes probably weren't aware that some of the equipment broadcasting Music One had been specially built and tweaked for the station. Having listened to a few other short term radio stations the Music One Management had declared that the audio output of Music One be superior in quality to any of those who had broadcast before Music One. The Transmitter and associated equipment was custom built in Long Buckby by a talented gentleman who went on to present a number of successful shows on Heart FM in Birmingham.
The stations studio's were located in one of Rugby's high spots in the town centre area which, coupled with a very long metal pole enabled the station to fix its broadcast aerial high in the air above Rugby, meaning a clear, strong signal for many miles, which reached Long Buckby in the South and mid Coventry in the North!

Most of the guests on Music One were well behaved, the only time that problems nearly occured was during a late night Phil & Ben show when local band My Darling Ni-Hilist decided to vent their anger against televison pop programmes. Fortunately threats of being removed from the studio's by Music One security soon calmed things down and the band went on their merry way. Ben's "roving microphone" certainly stopped roving long enough for Phil to bring back some normality to proceedings.
A small mention should also be made for the often unheard and unseen mishaps that happened during the broadcast of Music One. The evening when Darren Marks spilt an entire cup of tea all over his CD collection in the studio, the time when Dance Music DJ's Gump & Trip arrived 20minutes late for their show and the proceeding presenter had to pad for them, The problem on the last day of transmission when the main station power unit went up in smoke, and the presenter who failed to cut the mustard who only ever presented one show on the station!!
And a special mention to Darren Marks who managed to tie himself up in the studio headphone cable which had to be "secured" before his next stint on the station !!
