History Of Music One.

In 1999 A team of local broadcasters got together with the idea of providing Rugby and the surrounding villages with a truly local radio service.  After much deliberation the enterprise was named "Music One" and from that day on the team vowed to bring a locally produced and locally staffed radio service to the airways in Rugby.  The first plan was to broadcast a short term trial radio station to gauge public and commercial interest in the town.

Throughout 1999 the team grew, bringing well known professionals from the media industry, seasoned Hospital Radio presenters and new talent together for the first time.  The station "Music One" would cover an 8 mile radius emanating from the town centre of Rugby in Warwickshire, and would broadcast 24hours a day for a period of 4 weeks Licensed by the Radio Authority (now Ofcom) under the RSL Restricted Service License regulations.

Music One was lucky enough to secure a close relationship with local paper the Rugby Advertiser under the Editorial control of Peter Aengenheister.  The paper would support the radio station through editorial and advertising coverage in the paper, and through producing the local news which was broadcast 4 times daily on the station, the newspapers reporters broadcasting the news live themselves.

On 6th January 2000 the Radio Authority granted Music One a broadcasting license, just two days before the station went on air!

The station broadcast non stop until midnight on February 4th 2000

Music One was the most exciting, feature packed, cutting edge local radio station ever to grace the airwaves in Rugby and the surrounding villages.  On Drivetime each day Richard Green, a longstanding broadcaster involved for many years in Hopsital Radio at the St Cross Hopsital in Rugby featured a guest in the "hotseat" a feature which saw local MP's, charity workers and even an upcoming band take to the airwaves.

Alongside locally produced and presented news was national news on the hour every hour, and breaking traffic news was also brought to the airwaves through commercial sources and local road reporters.

Every night on the "Phil & Ben Show" a local band took to the airwaves to promote their works and a multitude of local businesses donated meals to be won on the show.

Music One was and still is to this day the only local radio station to broadcast to Rugby using local people and resources, something the team have always been very proud of.
